~ New Kid on the Block ~

Tuesday at 3 was the trade deadline in the NHL.  Buffalo had been trying to reach a deal with Brian Campbell to keep him in Buffalo, as his contract was up in July and as of the 1st he would be an unrestricted free agent.  As much as I hate being the incubator for the NHL, I also hate the fact that the players always want more.  More years, more money.  In hockey the contracts and money is guaranteed, not something you see in baseball or football.  I hate the 'small market team' card, but it is what it is.  We do not have the corporations or TV dollars that allow the team to just spend wildly.  It is a business and as much as you hate to see players go you have to look at the big picture.  With that said, a contract could not be done.  It's being reported that Campbell wanted 7 years at 7 million a year.  We have other players to sign, our goalie for one.  How on earth can you spend that much on one player and keep the team in tact.  Before the day was done on Tuesday, Brian was traded to San Jose for young gun Steve Bernier.  I will be honest in saying I only heard his name mentioned once or twice and knew little about him.  He's a big boy and has soft hands in front of the net.  Something we could use even if it leaves are defense a bit suspect.

Last night was his first game as a Sabre.  He openly admitted being nervous and excited.  The fans all had their eyes on him to see how and what.  It didn't take him long to win the hearts of all.  Four minutes in he scored his first goal as a Sabre.  Ten minutes later, another.  He had an assist and stood up for his new teammates when the opposing team lost their cool.  Could be beginners luck, but then they said that when Danny Briere came here from Phoenix several years back.  With any luck at all this 22 year old will play with the intensity he showed last night and be a staple here in Buffalo.   For now... they just need to pull wins together to get in the top 8 of the Eastern Conference.

... we will see if the Sabres can make it in the playoffs ... being a Wing fan in hockey is akin to being a Yankee fan in baseball ... but at least I grew up rootin' for the 'Dead Wings' in the early '80's and can reap the benefits of their success ...

... as we have a former Sabre in goal ..!  But John Vanbriesbrook was from 'round here ... and so was Pat LaFontaine ... so it's fair play ..!

It's too bad...across the board...athletes are robbing the next-geners (and me!) of a good time.  I accept that they have financial responsibilities but, heck!  ;)  C.
