~ GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR ~

Good Gawd I hate AOL sometimes!!!  Ok, most of the time.  If it wasn't for you great folks I think I would have walked long ago.   I happened to be going thru my comment alerts and filling requests for tags I when I realized there were several comments I did not get alerts for.  I think I found them all, but damn who knows.  It is so sporadic...  some folks I got alerts for certain comments but not others made only minutes apart.  GRRRRRRRR  Did AOL even save them all?  Are entry alerts going out?  If not, I just wasted a few minutes typing this.  Did they do another upgrade?  An improvement?  It always seems when they do, the rest of the services for journals goes to hell in a hand basket.   Is it just me?  Did I do too many entries last night?  I know I went a bit overboard.  LOL  So if you didn't get your tag for the recent offers, can you let me know.  I'm current as of this moment... as far as I can tell.  If you think you may have missed some offers take a look back, I've been informed no alert went out for the last two entries.  GRRRRRR

Thanks & Hugs

~ Transformation ~

Well, the count down has begun.  Several weeks ago I had mentioned the 'Ice Bowl'.  Hmmmm the NHL is actually calling it the 'Winter Classic.'  Remember?  The Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins will be playing outside on News Year Day.  It's not the first time it's happened, but it's the first time in the new NHL that it will be taking placing in the good 'ole USA.

Sunday afternoon, immediately following the Buffalo Bills game, the transformation started.  In the midst of pounding rain/snow and high wind gusts the workers started taking down the goal posts and preparing the football field to become an ice rink.  With such limited time they are working 12 hour shifts around the clock.  That is, except for Christmas day.  Good thing too, remember the snow?  It was hard enough laying the tarp in the wind, doing any other work in the 'storm' would have been hell.

The tarp was laid and the wood put in place.  Since the football field has a 6-9 inch crown at center field they had to level off the surface.  Tubing laid, sand, water, more sand.  Refrigeration in place to keep it ice. They let the sand get cold and virtually freeze.  The have the boards up, and the ice was completed.  The have it painted white, and they put another layer of water.  When it freezes again they will paint the logo and add more water to freeze over the top.

Guess what?   Currently it is 44 degrees and raining!  Yes, you heard me right, rain!   The one thing we feared more then anything.  No harm, no foul.  The temps will drop again tonight and it will get cold for several days.  Snow flurries are expected on New Years Eve, and all should be a go for Tues.

I really wanted to go, but the more I see the rink the more I think that is way too much money to be 'part of it'.   It's hard enough to see a football from the stands, I can't imagine seeing a puck.  Good Gawd!  I'd need binoculars for sure.  Ok, ok, I'll admit it.  I still want to go!!  Damn it!!

Sooooooooooooo if you aren't too hung over, and have a few minutes.... check some of it out on Tuesday.  This commercial was filmed locally.  Ryan Miller in a meat locker to get the frosted breath effect.  They showed some of the filming and when he walked out you could tell he was frozen.  Should be interesting to see how the boys are all dressed on Tuesday.  You know where I'll be.  Yeap.  In the comfort of my warm home, drink and snacks in hand, glued to the TV.  Lets go Sabs!

~ Guess........... ~

DsDesignsHappyNewYear.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

.......... what I did today.  'Cmon, guess.  It's Thursday, I'm off all week.  What do you suppose I did?  Did you guess?  LMAO  Ok, well that was a bit lame.  You'd never know as I haven't even given the news yet.

I went to David's Bridal to look for a wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.  Now, before you eww and ahhh, pass out, lose your breath, or fall off your chair.  It wasn't for me.  :)~   My niece is getting married in October.  She got engaged this past October.  I am so excited and happy for her.

So why did I wait so long to say anything?   Not really sure, other then most attention was on her Mom.   She had a trip planned with her boyfriend when her Mom first got sick and put in the hospital with pneumonia.  She had purchased tickets to the Michigan game for his birthday back in July.  The timing sucked, but at the time we thought her Mom would bounce back and all insisted she go.  The engagement part wasn't really part of the plan and to be honest I didn't even know about it.  Her boyfriend had the ring and already asked her Dad's permission.  It just happened while they were there.  It was a perfect time and setting.

My sister was thrilled.  As she told me the news, her eyes were wide with excitement.  Little did we know at the time.......   she never did bounce back but knowing her daughter was happy, in love, and had a great guy by her side had to put her at ease just a bit.   I ached for my sister.  I can't imagine not being here to see your children marry, to see your grand children.  To love and hold......... and knowing you won't be.  I ache for my nieces... it sucks that their Mom isn't here to help them plan, giggle over silly things.

I promised my sister I'd be there for them and I will be.  Not that she needed to ask, or that I needed to promise.  It is a given.  We are all there for them, any time night or day.   So on Christmas Eve she told me she was going with her sister.  She was thrilled that I would go.  'Was there a doubt?'  we both smiled with tears in our eyes.   We met up at noon for lunch.  My other sister was in the area with work so she joined us.  It was a wonderful time.  Perfect setting and nice to laugh and plan.   When lunch was over my sister left and the girls and I walked to the store a few shops down the strip plaza.  It was overwhelming when we walked in.  So many dresses.  She had an idea of what she wanted.  No kidding.   What girl doesn't dream about her wedding day.  What she will wear, the flowers, the food.

We looked at bridesmaid dresses first.  Her sister is in the wedding and did the modeling.  OMG!  Can I just say she was beautiful in each and every one she put on.  They decided on a tea length dress that actually is two pieces.  Espresso, and perfect for a fall wedding.  Once that was settled, we moved to the brides dresses.  She had 4 picked out to try on.  The first was stunning.  We called it the mermaid dress.  It made her look as thin as a bean poll, something she did not need help with.  She stood and looked at herself, and she seemed to be pleased.  It wasn't her first choice, and I asked, 'can you walk?  can you dance?'  She smiled and said it was daring but definitely not her.  The second one.  OMG!!  That was it.  I think we all knew it as she walked out of the dressing room.  She did a few spins, and we added a veil.  No description my friends, just in case.  I don't want to be the Aunt that gave away the secrets.  She did try on the others, and then went back to the second.  I think it's a done deal.  She didn't pay for it, but will think on it a few days and make sure that is what she wants.  I am 100% convinced it will be.

As we packed up our belongings we noticed it was almost 5.  WoW!!  Time flies when you're having fun.  It was a wonderful day and I am honored to be part of this step in her planning.  I, of course, can no way replace her Mom nor would I try.  I just want to be there for her.   We all do.  This a beautiful occasion and we want it to be as perfect for her as we can possibly make it.

The rest of the day was basically a let down.... this, and that, and hockey.......... yeap I'm watching Calgary play Vancouver.  Can you say sucker?  LOL   Hope everyone had a great day.

Hugs

~ Eve of the Eve ~

DsDesignsHappyHolidays.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

I can't believe Christmas Eve officially arrives in less then an hour.   Emotions flood over me in a flash.  Happy, sad, worried, and excited.  I have no idea what to expect the next couple of days.  I do know I miss my sister and I so wish she was here with us.

Today was spent finishing the wrapping.  Why I left things 'til the end is beyond me.  But, I am done and it's all under the tree.  No reason to hide gifts away.  Besides, I thought if they were sitting there it would help bring on the spirit.  And it has, a little.

My neighbors had to do a trip to Philly.  They left this morning to drive their daughter back, they will be home tomorrow.  I was asked to dog sit.  No problem, the dog is easy.  Or so I thought.  I went up to get him to take him out to do his duty.  He got all excited and came running down the stairs.  We went to the basement and as I opened the sliding glass door he turned his nose up and walked away.  He's not dumb.  It was raining and the wind was howling.  He walked away and made his way back home.  Leaving me standing there in the door way.  Ok, so he doesn't have to go.  I tried several more times through the day, and natta.  He was having nothing to do with it.  Hours later all I could think was he would have an accident.  So I forced him outside and left him there until he went.  He stood looking at me with the big puppy dog eyes wanting to come back in.  The cold must have hit him.  After a few minutes he walked over to the grass and went.  YEAH!!  He headed back to the door and as I opened it he ran like a bat out of hell up the stairs.  I think he was pissed at me.  If could have I think he may have done it literally after making him go out.

The weather has been wacky all day.  Rain, and snow.  Lots of wind, with gusts over 60 MPH.  At times you'd look out and it would just look cold.  Other times you couldn't see across the street.  Doesn't look to be accumulating much, and I hope it stays that way.  Though having a white Christmas is wonderful, I do not want to be buried.

Tomorrow we will gather at my parents house.  I will probably go over early with the bags and bags that need to go.  For not exchanging gifts we sure do have a lot of them.  LOL  Those damn kids are so spoiled.  :)  I'm talking the little kids, by the way.   After a quick visit and help with last minute things I will come home and get ready.  We won't be gathering until later in the day as some have to work.  I am so glad I am not one of them!!   We won't be doing our traditional turkey dinner tomorrow.  We will do roast beef sandwiches, ham, cheesy potatoes, salads, clam chowder.  Of course this will be in addition to your normal party snacks of veggie trays, taco dip, cheese and crackers.  Let us not forget pies and cookies.  Mom is afraid there won't be enough food.  LMAO!!   Mothers, they always think that don't they?

Tuesday morning my sisters boys, my son, and his girlfriend will come over to open gifts.  We will do a big breakfast and then split up and go our merry way.  I hope I have some time to 'play' with my gift.  It will be a little crazy, but keeping busy will be good.  I do wish you all a very Merry Christmas!!

~ The Boys are Back ~

DsDesignsBoysareBack.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

Some might notice I am highlighting a bit of a different jersey today.  A different team.  Of course, I do have some of my boys in there as well.  :)  This weekend the boys played a home and home series against the Philadelphia Flyers.  The Flyers and the Sabres have a huge history.  Back in 1975 the teams met in the Stanley Cup Finals.  The boys lost, but not without a fight.  Back in the day the Flyers were known as the 'Broad Street Bullies.'  Big guys and very physical.  This season they look like they are trying to come back to that name.  Already this season they've had 8 players suspended for illegal hits.   Many a team have feared the wrath of the Flyers so far this year.  Add to the history the fact that two loved former Sabres are now on the team.  Marty Biron, who had been our back up goalie for years was traded last season.  He deserved a starting position, and I was extremely happy that his dream was coming true.  Made it very difficult for many a Sabre fan to 'hate' the Flyers.   Then in the off season Danny Briere went to Philly.   Danny is a goal scorer, and contributed a great deal to the team here.  A sad day, but at 10 Million a year something the Sabres were not going to do.

So Friday the Flyers come to Buffalo.  Both former players were interviewed.  Most answers were politically correct.  Marty has always had a great sense of humor, and loved to play along with the humor the local sports media had in store.  One reporter asked Marty about the fans of Philly.  It's necessary to bring up some history on them too.  They are passionate, and I might add some are insane.  In the Eagles (football) stadium, there is a jail to house the rowdies who get out of hand.   Years ago when the Eagles played the Cowboys, Michael Irvin got hurt.  A broken leg I think.  The fans stood and cheered.  Now, I never liked Irvin either, but I would never cheer an injury.   JP Dumont, got hurt in Philly during a hockey game, they cheered then.  There was one fan who got into it with a hockey player as he sat in the penalty box.  He tried to climb over and the glass gave way.  He fell into the box with the player and started throwing punches.  Hello!?!?!  This guy has equipment on, what the hell are you thinking?   Too much beer maybe?  During many of the play off games we've had, I've seen the fans throw things on the ice, throw beers at the coach.  One time they even threw batteries at Santa.  WTF!?!   So back to my story.....   Marty is asked about the fans.  He replies with a bit of humor so not to piss off his new fans.  Remember he expects them to cheer for him.  'I don't know about throwing batteries at Santa.  He must of done something.  Maybe he asked for more for the toys he was going to give out that year.'   Cracked me up, but then it's not really funny.

So game time.  The pre-game skate both players are cheered, but during the game they were the enemy.  Many boos as Danny touched the puck.  Cheers as Marty gave up a goal.  I think both players know they are adored by many here in Buffalo, but when the game begins all bets are off.  They are the opposing team.   The game was awesome!  Physical, and my boys did not back down.  They took the lead in the first.  Philly came back in the second to tie, then take the lead.  In the third we tied it.  With about 3 minutes left in the game Jochen Hecht scores to give the boys the lead.  Game ends 3-2.

Game two was Saturday in Philly.  The hype about the physical play was more then it turned out to be, but it was physical.   There was more scoring though.  We took the lead early again, but before the period ended the score was tied at 1.   The second period was back and forth with each team scoring 3 goals.  Not a great night for either goaltender.  About 4 minutes into the third period Philly scored with the man advantage.  The score stayed that way.  Philly buckled down and allowed my boys only 7 shots on net.  It wasn't looking good.  Then with 7 seconds left in the game, Jochen Hecht takes a shot from the circle.  Vanek is in front of Marty, and is able to tip the puck to the back of the net.  Cardiac kids!  They scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.  There were a few tit for tat penalties called in OT, but the boys hung on.  Then the shoot out.  Ales Kotalik scores the only goal and the Sabres go on to win 6-5

So the boys are back, and it was nice to see them.  It was much nicer to have my boys back as they won both games and added 4 points to their standing.  They leaped into 6th place in the Conference with 39 points.   There aren't many points that separate the teams, but it is much better to be above the playoff line then below.   Boys play again on Wed and take on the team in first place in our Conference.  It would be nice if they could stitch another win into the mix.

Merry Christmas!

~ Chaotic ~

                   DsDesignsXmasChaos.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

Not even sure if that is the word I should be using.  It was a long day.  We had our holiday lunch at work.  It wasn't anything huge, but a little something to enjoy.  As we all know, health insurance goes up every year.  And 2008 will be no different.  It was announced several weeks ago the company would pick up all the difference.  Insurance is out of control!  The difference would have been about $80 more out of my check monthly.  A bit steep for something we need.  I am thrilled and would have accepted that as the complete holiday present.  Instead, we got a lunch and we ate like an army.  Finger foods galore including every imaginable combination of stromboli and roast beef sandwiches.  We all even got a little something extra.  A gift card for a local grocery store.  Not much money, but enough and it was nice to be appreciated.  I also got my checks for the two cards I did.  I knew what the first would be but had no idea what to expect for the company holiday card.  Let me tell you it was much more then I expected.  It will definitely come in handy!  Whooooo hooooooo  can you say Santa is buying Santa something?  LOL

Several months ago a co-worker was selling Christmas cookies.  I had ordered a few dozen and my niece did as well.  She was thinking ahead knowing her mom would not be up to baking and it would be nice to have some in the house for visitors.  Little did we know.  After my sister passed I asked my niece if she still wanted them.  She did.  Well they were delivered to me today so I in turn delivered.  I feel a bit guilty but I haven't been there since the day my sister died.  As I turned down the street the tears flowed.   Surely it was missing her along with that guilt.  I've talked to all of them, but I hadn't stopped over.  Today was the first time.  I calmed myself down and made my way in the house.  We chatted and laughed.  Then we cried.  The house screams of my sister.  Pictures, her favorite knick knacks.  Christmas decorations that her girls had pulled out.  Not exactly the same as she would have had it, but it was a bit festive and they are trying.   I didn't want the tears to flow, but I think it was good.  If that makes sense.  We all miss her and pretending we don't isn't going to help.  Don't get me wrong we laughed and remembered.........   but the tears were exhausting.

Tomorrow I leave work at 2 and then I'm off all of next week.  I am looking forward to it.  No major plans except for the normal holiday running...  at this point anyway.   I'm off to bed to rest these eyes.

Hope everyone is doing good.

Hugs

~ So Smart ~

                   DsDesignsXmasTree.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

Hey all!  Hope this finds you well.  I had to do an entry on how smart I am.  Yeap, me.  Smart.  As my nephew sings, 'I am so smart, I am so smart, smrt.'  Inside joke, but that is all I could think of when I went through my comment alerts earlier today.

Over two years ago I started doing tags.  I became addicted and things just took off.  Some of you have been around since that time.  Well, did you also know I did it knowing that AOL would eventually put a journal main page together and highlight the journals with the most comments?  ROFLMAO!!!

 Comment from bebadpb
12/18/07 1:59 PM |
your the skunk that played this tag game just so you could get more hits- YOU SUCK AND YOU WILL ALWAYS SUCK _ ALL YOU DO IS BITCH_BITCH _BITCH ABOUT ANYONE THAT TELLS WHAT A PIECE OF GARBAGE YOU ARE

Isn't that nice?  Yeap, couldn't resist.  Even left the comment up.  Why bother deleting it?  Someone spends more time searching out journals on the main page to get their panties in a knot instead of joining the community and realizing what it's all about.  Who cares who is on the main page?  Who cares who has the most comments?  Do a journal, visit others and share half way decent comments and you will get visitors.  We all have different tastes and some will stick around others won't.  That's life, it's how it goes.

I'd like to thank you for thinking me so smart to know 2 years ago what would happen today.  Damn I wish I knew the numbers for the Mega Million too!  Then I'd really be smart!  And rich!   But then again, I am rich.   Rich with friends and loved ones.   It's said, 'garbage in, garbage out'  Take it for what it's worth.

:::sigh:::  Life is good, I'm happy.. hope you are too.

~ Warning - Important Journal Info - Please Read ~

Well, I will start by stating I've already contacted Journalseditor.  I frowned upon having email addresses next to comments from the get go.  My fear came true today.  Someone went thru my journal and emailed several folks who left comments.  The mail is titled 'RE: Your comment in journal Thisandthatandhockey'  when you open the mail the comment is there and then it is followed by some BS advertising.  I am sorry if you received this note.

I will let you all know here and now that is not how I respond to comments left in my journal.  I reply to the alert that was sent to me when you left the comment.  So you will see this, 'Re: AOL Journals Comment Added Alert ("This and that, and hockey!")'

I can't control the folks who click on email to send you a note, but wanted to warn you this is happening.  I also wanted to let you know you will want to watch the email address the note is coming from.

Hopefully AOL will rethink this process..........  again I'm sorry if you were spammed today.

EDIT:  feel free to forward your complaints or this type of spam mail on to  journalseditor@aol.com  Let them know how you feel.

What a lazy day!  I don't think I mentioned this the other night, but when we had snow and my son came over to shovel, I had moved my car to allow the plow more room to maneuver.  Since I was the only car in the drive it helped to have it out of the way so he could get the entire thing clear.  After I got my car back in it's spot I was walking back down the drive and I took a spill.  Graceful it was not.  I landed hard on my right knee and my left leg was twisted and behind me.  Being a cheerleader years ago did not help one bit.  I was twisted and sore.  Once I got up I felt some what ok.  On Saturday I slid again in the parking lot of the store.  I didn't fall but I definitely pulled my groin as I not so gracefully kept from falling.  So here I sit feeling like an athlete.  Or not.  No way in hell I was attempting anything today.  I was just taking it easy.

The snow over night was not that bad, maybe 4 inches.  The plow came and cleared the driveway, but it mattered not.  I was staying put.  It rained a bit, and then snow started to fall again.  It fell all day.  If you happened to see the game in Cleveland you saw what I was getting.  The wind picked up and the light flakes blew all over.  I suppose another 8-10 inches.  The plow just came again, and my nephew Mike was here.  He went and moved vehicles, cleared my car off and it looks like I will be good to go in the morning.  I was a bit worried about having to clear off the car and around it after the plow, but I only have what falls this evening to worry about.  YEAH!  I'll be buying that boy a bottle of booze!  The hot cocoa and doughnut when he came in just isn't pay enough.

The news it out.  The Bills lost today.  I had to turn the channel a few times.  Not because of poor play but straining to watch.  The snow falling, the white jerseys, and the wind blowing gave me a headache.  Ok, so the bad play too.  One more year with out the play offs.  ::sigh:: Getting use to it.

I'm going to do a little rant here.  Hack, Chris Simon, of the NY Islanders is at again.  Saturday night while the Isles played the 'Guins, Simon pulled his cheap bullshit.  After a subtle knock down, he stomped on the opposing players ankle as he lay on the ice.

Hockey skate blades are sharp.  He could have cut the guys ankle causing major damage.  A cowardly act.  He should be banned for life.  This asshole doesn't play the game, he tries to hurt and maim players.  No respect for himself or fellow players.  Sad thing, is the league will probably only suspend him a couple games.  How soon they will forget his previous acts.  Last year he took his stick and decked an opposing player......  across the face...  there are others too, but I'm sure you'll get the idea.  GRRRRRR  Chris Simon you are mocking my sport.  You don't deserve the right to be called an NHL player.  Take a seat!

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I am feeling a bit better now, but not the best.  Sore, and not even close to being in the holiday spirit.  Not one Christmas card was mailed.  I feel horrible, but I am hoping folks will understand.  Just not with it or as organized as I usually am.  I'm lucky I got the gifts needed for the family.  I'm hoping the mood will switch and quickly.

~ Battle of Lake Erie ~

The Buffalo Bills are in Cleveland playing the Browns.  If you have the game on CBS, give it a whirl to see the wonderful weather this area is getting.  Looking out my window, I'm seeing pretty much the same thing.  This game has some meaning.  Buffalo needs to win to have a chance to get into the playoffs.  Cleveland is ahead of them in the standings.  Will the weather play a part?  Who will win?

Play along......  it's for fun :)

~ The Great Outdoors ~

DsDesignsGreatOutdoors12-15-07.jpg picture by 55hockeyfan

Early this morning I was standing at my kitchen counter making a cup of coffee.  Looking out my window it appeared I was in a bird sanctuary.  It was amazing to see the flight of so many different kinds of birds.  It was early and I was not dressed, but I wanted to try and get a shot of a few of them.  I grabbed my camera and went to my bathroom window.  I popped the window open, lifted the storm window, and then the screen.  There I stood with cold air rushing in, camera in hand.  I could smell the newly lit fire in the basement, see the smoke as it drifted out over the lawn.  In the distance I heard the tap tap tap of something I wasn't sure of.  When I looked off in the distance near the base of a tree there was woodpecker.  Playing his music as the other birds danced through the sky.  Some landing for an occasional rest.  Others singing along to his drum.  Then of course the red of the cardinal caught my eye.  So bright and vibrant.  I had to share.

I did a bit of running today.  I had to get a few more items for Christmas and I wanted to run to the grocery store.  I didn't need much, but they had been calling for a massive winter storm and I didn't want to get caught flat footed.  Ok, I didn't want to be caught without some goodies to nibble on incase I was stuck in the house.  :)   The weatherman hit it right on target.  The snow started falling about 7:15 or so.  It's the finest snow, and appears almost like that fake stuff you would see in a movie.   Fake it is not!  It's not accumulating like they had predicted and now they are saying it will turn to freezing rain in the early morning then turn back to snow.  We'll see what I wake up to.

Some may remember, back in June, I did an entry about 'local boy makes good'.  Patrick Kane was drafted number 1 in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.  Patrick grew up in South Buffalo, and is the current hockey darling of the city.   At barely 19, he is playing in the NHL.  A dream come true!  My Dad knows his Grandfather, so his career is of great interest to us.  Back in Sept or so when the schedule came out we learned Chicago would be coming to play the Sabres.  My Dad wanted to go, but when I looked back then there were only single tickets and in the 300 level.  With the issues my Dad has that was not going to work.  There was no way he could get to the top of the arena.  Well, the other day my brother bought tickets.  In the 100 level, 22 rows from the ice.  No stairs, and no climbing.  Perfect seats.  Of course he took my Dad.  I've been so excited for him since I learned he was going.

The game started out with a tribute to Patrick, the fans applauding like mad for him.  There was a ceremonial puck drop that brought his Dad, and his Grandfather to center ice.  What a tear jerker.  So emotional.  I was so happy my Dad was there to see it.  Then the best of all best.   Just a bit over 2 minutes into the game Patrick scores a goal.  The crowd cheered even though it meant our boys were down 1-0.  I wonder if his family even made it to their seats to see it.   Good news is, that is all they wrote for Chicago.  The boys went on to win 3-1.  The best of all worlds.

AOL has been extremely funky these days.  Takes several attempts to open some journals, and sometimes I have to try multiple times before I can even leave a comment.  If the AOL God's want to grant me the privilege.  WTF!?!  Ohhh... another update.....  Guess we should be glad we have alerts.  :::knocking on wood:::  Nothing like being behind on alerts, trying to Carol thru JLand and not having the freaking place work.  UGH!!!  I did do my best, and know I've been around...  comments didn't always stick, and sometimes you got a few.  Sorry.

Ok, I'm off to bed... stay warm and safe.

~ Winter Silence ~

DsDesignsMyBackyard.jpg picture by 55hockeyfan

Evenin!  Thought I'd share a bit of my day.  I took the day off to take my Mother and my younger sister shopping.  We made plans last week.  We planned to make a day of it.  Getting out early, do lunch, and have some fun.  My sister's birthday is tomorrow so it worked out perfect.  That is until this morning.  I got up and got moving early.  I had some coffee and visited some journals.  By 8:30 the snow started falling.  It kept falling.  Nice big flakes.  Pretty flakes drifting to the ground, as they passed tree branches the jumped on and stayed there.  It made a pretty winter wonderland, except that it was a bit dreary.  I took my shower and got dressed.  I was amazed at the amount of snow that fell.  I grabbed my camera and went into the backyard to get a few pictures.  Two black birds snuggled in a tree to stay warm.  Another by itself looking over the land.  You can see that it is snowing in the pictures.  Not real sure how to get rid of that 'blur', but hopefully with practice I can do it.  I then decided to take a quick video so you could see... and hear... winter silence.

We did go to the mall and got a bit of shopping done.  Driving was horrible, and the snow kept falling.  I bought new boots and a few odds and ends for my son.  They bought the gifts they needed too.  A lot of time was spent looking for each other.  GRRRR  That's the norm when I take them.  Actually, probably the norm when anyone takes them.  That's why I took the WHOLE day off.  LOL  On the way home the snow had stopped and we took a run into Premier Liquor.  I finished up my gift for my 'secret Santa' that will be given tomorrow at our department holiday lunch.  Of course, I also picked up a few stocking stuffers for the kids.  Shot/sample size bottles of booze.  No worries, they are all of legal age!

When I finally got home I wanted to cry.  The driveway was full.  A good 6 inches of snow.  Wet heavy snow.  After a long day, I knew my body was not going to be able to clear it.  My driveway is huge and can hold 6 cars comfortably and we still have empty space.  To say nothing about it being on a hill.  Usually a friend stops with his plow, but I couldn't take the chance.  My driveway is horrible in winter.  Even with a small amount of snow the hill is a killer trying to get up it and out.  I needed to be sure I could get out in the morning.  I called my son and he came to my rescue.  What a good boy!  He started clearing the way and the friend did show up.  My son was thrilled.  Surely he wasn't happy he came for no reason, but I know he was glad he didn't have to do it.  LOL  Feeling bad I made him come out for nothing I sent him home with some goodies.  His girlfriend has been asking him to grab his stocking so they could hang it at their house.  Well, I did one better.  I had a stocking for her.  A beautiful white ice skate.  Sparkle snowflakes for the lace holes, a little ribbon.  For him, a cowboy boot.  LOL  I wanted a hockey skate but couldn't find one.  I also had ornaments with their names on them.  So I put them in a Christmas bag and sent him on his way.  The plan was to fill them and have them here for Christmas morning, but this worked out well.  I have his stocking from growing up and extra for her so I can still fill them.  He told me not to worry about the shoveling etc... but still...

My driveway is clear and I have no worries about tomorrow.  I hope!  They are not calling for snow this evening but they are warning us of a huge winter storm coming thru this weekend.  Apparently they are saying it could snow as far south as Georgia.   Sam, ever have snow at the docks?   LOL  Sending lots of warm hugs to everyone... be safe if the weather turns frightful.

This is how it works..

you leave the link to your journal here and then do an entry on your favorite holiday song.

Visit at least 5 journals who you believe will play along.  When you visit, leave your journal link in the comment section inviting them to play along and come see the song you chose.

I've always had two favorite songs.  The Little Drummer Boy topped the list, not sure exactly why.  Maybe it was the special on TV.  Well, last year my other favorite took over the top spot.  I know why it did too, the people singing!  Two of my favorite people singing a song I love.  My soul soared.  This year it brings tears as tho it was the first time I'm hearing it.  Thanks Pat and Ste, you both amaze me.  I'm so proud to call you friends!

~ What is IT doing? ~

     DsDesignsSantasList.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

A dreary day today.  Work flew by, and at lunch I went to my car to run an errand.  As I made my way through the parking lot it was dark, fairly warm, and raining.  As I started my car I was almost hypnotized by what I saw on my windshield.  Big fat rain drops landing on the glass, even without the sun they glistened.  Smaller drops fell, cling cling off the glass as they stuck like crystals in a fuzzy blanket.  As I watched, an occasional drop would run down the glass.  Then another.  It looked as though they were racing for a gold medal.  Sometimes the second drop would pass the first.  Like tear drops running down someone's cheek.  It was an amazing sight to see.  Simple, but amazing.  Something I rarely paid attention to before.  Maybe I did, but today it was in a different light.  Not every drop slid down the glass, not everyone stuck.  Some just splashed.  A mixture of rain, ice, and snow.  What is it doing?

This evening my niece stopped by with the kids.  Bug had gifts for my sister and I.  She had gone shopping with her Grandma, but could not wait to give us our treasures.  Treasures they were.  She bought us each a holiday pin.  I can't wait to wear mine.  Two candy cans forming a heart, outlined in sterling silver with a little bell.  It will look perfect on my black sweater.  She's such a sweet heart.  Non stop she told stories, bouncing from here to there in my house.  She asked for my nut cracker so she could have nuts.  I looked and told her I didn't have those kinds of nuts.  'Yes you do Aunt Donna.'  I smiled.  'No, bug, I don't.'  She ran to my kitchen and pointed to a bag on the top of my microwave.  Pistachio nuts.  'My favorite, can I have some?'  I felt horrible, but they were part of a gift and I couldn't open the bag.  She pouted for a second until I offered her cashews.  Smiles ear to ear.  She told me about her shopping trip, about the gifts she bought, and who she bought for.  She made us all aware she bought a bear for her very best friend.  Her Great Aunt, my sister.  I could feel the tears well up in my eyes.  With her serious little face she asked, 'how will she come down from heaven, will she slide down?'  I wanted to hug her tight, and try to explain.  We all just looked at her.  How do you explain to a 4 year old that you don't come back?  She went on to tell us she will be here for Christmas.  No one argued, she will be.   Talking about my sister as though she just had a conversation with her.  Did she?   So innocent and pure, no reason to doubt, open to all possibilities.  They say small children have a sense.  I believe our little bug does.  Call me nuts.

She sang a few songs for us, including saying her ABC's.  She asked me to take a movie.  LOL  A switch for sure.  I did take a video.  She was a hoot.  She did pretty good too.  See for yourself.  When she was done she wanted the camera.  She had me pose silly.  'Cross your eyes, tip your head, make a funny face with your mouth.  No like this', as she made Mr Ed type lips.  For one split second I thought about posting it.  Nope, not on your life.  It is a treasure though.  Suppose she was acting like me?  'Smile, look at the camera, no a nice smile.'  I think I may have created a monster.  :)

I had to shut down my computer a bit ago.  It's still raining, or whatever it is IT is doing, and my lights flickered a bit.  It appeared the houses across the street lost power.  I decided it best to just shut down.  I never lost power, just time.  So I'm sorry I if I didn't get to you, or get your tag out.  I will.

I also want to apologize.  After reading some comments and mails, I read my entry from yesterday again.  I did not mean to imply people forgot my sister.  I'm not even sure what I meant, but it sure as hell wasn't that.  I wanted to thank you for keeping the candles lit with me.  Nothing more nothing less.  No subconscious guilt if you hadn't, no subconscious guilt to get you to go and light one.  I'm sorry if any one felt as though I was pointing at them.  It truly was not my intent.

Hope everyone is safe and warm this evening.  I will leave you with Bug singing her ABC's... maybe next it will Christmas Carols.

Hugs

~ Monday ~

DsDesignsWhenLifegivesyousnow.gif picture by 55hockeyfan

I'm not even sure where the day went.  I woke this morning to have everything covered in ice.  Not as bad as the Chicago area from what I've seen on the news, but enough to have me take several minutes to scrape, scrape, and scrape some more.  I should have requested a remote starter for my car instead of an external hard drive.  LOL

I got to work and jumped right in.  Did a bit of tweaking on the holiday card and when I finally got up to get my first cup of java (at work - I already had a few before I left the house) it was already 10 am.  YIKES!   Oh, don't get me wrong, I love when the day flies by but that just reminded me how much work I had to do and hadn't even started.  Next thing I know I had worked through my lunch.  Not because I forgot to eat.  I NEVER forget to eat  LOL  I just didn't realize.  So about 1:30 I grabbed a cup of soup.  BLAH!  I nibbled but it wasn't cutting it.  I needed something good.  Did I get it?  No.  It was too late at that point.  Pigging out on my spaghetti dinner took care of the hunger rumbles.   Rumbles?  I think they were growls.  Big hearty, noisy growls.  Ones that you could hear across the room.

My nephew and his girlfriend stopped to do his resume.  We messed with it for a bit and between her and I we had it presentable.  Good thing.  The boys were on and I really thought I would get a chance to watch them play.  HA!  Play?  They looked like freakin figure skaters out there.  Not that figure skating is a bad thing, but this is hockey!!  They looked like a bunch of pansies and would have been better suited to be in tutu's instead of pads.  Don't get me wrong.  I love my boys and always will, but they frustrated the hell out of me today.  Today?  Hmmm more like a few good games and then this lazy, unmotivated play.  Some say it's because of the loss of two players.  I don't buy it.  Sure it hurt, but the injuries are what's getting to us now.  I am still screaming for a stay at home stud defenseman too.  Gaz- why did you come to mind when I said that? :)~   I don't know what the issue is.  Maybe two very long seasons with nothing to show for it.  Play off hangover.  Don't know.  I do know if they don't get their heads out of their asses they will be done in April.  They have dug hole that is going to be tough to get out of.  GRRRRRRRRRRR

On to the request for the external hard drive.  My computer is nice, over 80gb.  I have room, but my graphics are starting to take a toll.  I thought about a flash drive, but I really don't need to move the data, I just would like to store it off the main hard drive.  Secure it from crashes, and no doubt once I remove everything and clean it up I will be a speed demon.  I've done some research and my son will get that for me for Christmas.  The one I have in mind is even large enough where I could reserve the 80gb and use it for back up too, 500gb.  I think I'm loving that idea.

On another note.  I stopped to get the stocking stuffers on my way home.  As I made my way through the store I spotted a few things that my sister would have loved.  Tears flowed.  We, as siblings, have not exchanged on a personal level in years.  We pick names, do baskets, buy gift cards and pick one Christmas Eve, so it wasn't that.  I miss her.  I miss our calls, laughs, stories.   I can't pick up the phone and call her.  I do talk to her, regularly, it's just not the same.  I try really hard to put the brave face on.  Act like I have my act together, but days like today just have things come crashing in.  Something so simple as a goofy candle, a Christmas ornament, a smell of perfume.  Damn it's hard!  So freakin' hard!  I still light a candle for her.  I can't give it up yet.  I do appreciate those of you that still click on the graphic on my sidebar and leave word.  Makes my heart and soul warm to know I'm not the only who hasn't forgotten.  Thank you.

WTH!?!  I just saw the time.  Today is a blur and it's now tomorrow.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Hugs
