~ Update ~

I've gotten several emails and alerts stating that hometown shutting down will in fact include journals.  It's a shame those in charge of keeping us informed sent emails to a select few and left the rest of us to fend for ourselves wondering about it.  Wouldn't it have been great if we had a journal that could be used as a point of contact so this information could have been announced to the community?  Say a Magic Smoke or something?   Cripes... the WTH?!?!  Journals Editor.. what the hell is being edited?  Sorry Vish, but that is and was unacceptable.  The announcement for hometown shutdown was on Aug 4.  Read it here.  We as a community aren't even important enough to warrant an entry or announcement?  We get a freakin banner added to our journals stating hometown will shutdown and the link to show us how to save things goes to an empty page.  Impressive!  NOT!!!  Typical AOL.  If I'm not mistaken, that save process will only save the graphics, songs, etc on a page not the actual words.  I will look into more when I get home from work.

For those of you going to another site please leave links in your journals so we can find you.  I do NOT want to lose the friends I've made.

Thanks for the info Donna, I am passing it on.

i can not even get those in the know to open the email i sent. Guess only a few warranted enough attention to be told. Are they more important than the hundreds other that are effected? Hell no. But, again, typical.
I will never lose contact with you..not after five years. Screw AOL.

I do not know why I was picked as one of the selective few. I told Vishy it should have been announced on Magic Smoke.  The whole thing has been handled in a shoddy and underhand way and now you will see from my latest entry that us UK bloggers are being hung out to dry.

I'm heading to Blogger...and what I've decided to do is just copy and paste all my entries over there.

I don't really know what else to do.  I can't afford the paper and ink to print all these entries out (5 years worth), and I don't think I have enough FTP space to save it all there either.

So, copy and paste it is.  It's going to take me until October 31st to transfer this!  Uggghhh.

I'm pissed.

XOXO,
bridgett

p.s. I'll send out a link when I have it up and running.

This is incredible isn't it? Its like being a terrorist has destroyed our community. I hope that "relocation" isn't going to break the chain of fellowship that has forged here. I have never felt dismayed at a group breaking up since the Beatles...Hugs, Dannelle

I added a comment IN Magic Smoke as will other i hope...SHAME on the blogging EMPLOYEES of AOL...they are employed to blog all day...how hard is it to do it RIGHT!!! and to ACTUALLY DO IT???

You are right! I found out via the banner as well.
and a REASON??? WHERE is the REASON AOL?

Just a simple "Sorry for the Inconvenience" is all we got!!!
Most likely 80% of AOL J's community will go to Blogger. They are second best next to AOL...but the community there SUCKS! I had one for awhile. the service is great...just the community is lacking!

Sad Sad day in history! SAD!

I've been visiting journals encouraging people to add the following tags to their entries:   Blog Plugs,  AOL, AOL JOURNALS,  KEEP AOL JOURNALS AVAILABLE, Yahoo, Hotmail, Blog Spot.

I personally refuse to go to People Connection.  Just by looking at their homepage I can see their set up is "Shabby".  The one an only reason I subscribe to AOL is because I didn't wnat to lose my Journal.  Oh, I'm repeating myself, I wrote this on my entry. I'm heading to Magic Smoke next.  You are  100% correct,  what are they doing all day if they can send AOL members an Email.  They know the popularity of this feature.   hugs,  Bethe

This stinks! Donna please make sure i know where you are so i can still get your wonderful tags hun please and TY

If you figure out how to save our journal content Donna, please share it with those of us that are not as computer illiterate as you.  Thanks Sweetie.  I hate this.  I don't think I will be moving but I have to think about it.

i will ... I hope I can figure this out ... you make sure you do the same ...

I've just done an entry on how to save your journal in it's original form. It's a far easier way than AOL's suggestion of going to the FTP space, it takes a minute to save it! This news is sickening isn't it. I hope people will leave AOL now and get a decent ISP who actually takes notice of us. Take care. Jeannette xx

Our journals are suppose to be migrated over to blogger - but I know I sure don't trust that happening properly. I guess all we can do is spend the next month making sure we have everything saved onto our computers or hard copy and start our own bloggers soon. It's all so sad ::sigh::

Donna,
My 2 cents worth is to get something going RIGHT NOW-- like YOU start saving all the frequent blogger's [including me] in a special file.   So that if something happens we could all have those resources and share them when the dust settles, please.
What is your take on that??

I find it quite ironic that in October I was going to start doing my journal again, as I have not been able to do it for quite some time and put more imput into it.  I do not understand what blogger.com is nor magic smoke, I am afraid I am pretty green at this.  I do though empathize with all of you that have been doing this for years.  I think this is a terrible move on AOL's part.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading many journals although I dont always comment and have personally met, you Donna and Linda in Washington and you are both wonderful people I am proud to know.  If you do go somewhere else I would appreciate knowing as I love your entries and your graphics and tags as far as I am concerned are superb.

Donna, I have made the transition.  Hope you will get a Blogger account soon.

Here is my info :o)

The latest is that on Oct 7th we will start getting e-mails.  Our total journal will be migrated to blogger or blogspot; it's the same thing.  You have to request migration and AOL will do it for you.  Your journal has to be public to be able to be migrated.  This is what they say, whether it works, who knows.  I've already started messing with one but have to say I'm a lost soul.  Love ya, Chris

I know, I just found out....

It's sad to see what is happening and especially since they have known for two months and are just getting around to telling anyone.  I know it will be a lot of work for you to change but I know you will since you love what you do.  Have a happy tomorrow . .  t-minus 31 days and counting.  I guess Halloween will be a trick on us and not a treat huh?  Luv ya!

You and I are already hooked up at Blogger.  I've had Blogger for awhile but was only using it to comment in other blogs there.  I'm just now getting to journal alerts from 9/30 and on.  Because we had ads at the top of our journals which I never look at, I didn't find out about this until I had read someone's journal entry.  If it weren't for the ads in our journals, I probably would have noticed the announcement but I sure don't think it was up there since Aug. 4th.  I'm mad as hell! I've been with AOL for over 12 years since they had 3.0 for WIN95.  I was with Prodigy for 2 yrs. before that but they ripped me off messing up my bank account so I left them for AOL.  I always have liked AOL because of the ease of navigation until they added the ads.  That pissed me off.  I'd like to know who received emails.  I didn't receive one until 10/1. I feel so betrayed.  ~Cont~

I have my own non-interactive educational email list that has grown to 7,000 subs with me being the only one to send mail BCC and because of AOL's mail limits......I would have so split the list up in several emails sending several emails throughout the day for several days taking me too long just to send an email or two.  I was willing to go thru all that trouble staying here.  But after this last stunt about journals, I have made an account with Gmail (with no mail limits) for my list and I probably will cancel my account with AOL.  I haven't completely made up my mind yet but I'm leaning towards it 75%.  Having to organize my contacts list and obtain new disclaimers because of my move is taking alot of my time.  I haven't even had time to read any Bloggers entries or make entries myself.  Thank God I haven't paid for AOL since the ads fiasco. This is truly AOLHell!!!!

Dana
